Women and Art - Changes Afoot

Female collectors are dominating the art market, according to Shan Ross in today’s Scotsman.

The Arts Council in England reports that 56% of contemporary art in the UK is purchased by women.

Patrick Elliott, the chief curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh is quoted as saying, “We’re also moving away from the rather masculine environment of the Seventies when an art gallery would have an attractive girl at the front desk to catch the male client, after which the man in the back room would appear to clinch the deal.”

One factor in the rise of women collectors is the success of Tracey Emin and her female contemporaries - another that women’s magazines are starting to feature art more in their publications.

A good read - and an important statistic for women and art in general.
