Serota Takes a Blow from Counterpunch

Touted as America’s best political newsletter, counterpunch.org runs a major piece on the Ofili scandal at the Tate.

In what The Independent newspaper calls “one of the biggest rows in its 100-year history”, the story of alleged corruption by Tate director Sir Nicholas Seorota and the trustees has never been fully addressed or answered as far as I can see. So I leave it to others, like Charles Thomson, co-founder of the Stuckists, to fight the good fight. If you can stand the colour scheme and the dubious typesetting, there is plenty of background on the Stuckists’ website - here.

The article, nearly 4,000 words, goes into great depth telling the tale of woe involving “fluffy” answers to the situation from government Ministers, members of the Charity Commission and, of course, the Tate gang themselves.

I have to say it makes me sad that such a wonderful place as the Tate Modern is tainted by this on-going debacle. A world class act, as the Tate is, should be above all this ducking and diving - squeaky-clean I think.

Whilst (some members of) the press, ArtWatch UK and other “interested parties” have to go to great lengths to expose what appears to be a huge cover-up, the smell of corruption will continue to hang over our beloved Tate.

It is time the powers-that-be publicly answered these charges and acted appropriately.

    Dear Ma
I agree with you that Sir Nicholas Serota and the Tate trustees can be exasperating, but I think one should refrain from outright abuse in favour of a presentation of the facts.
